What Martial Arts Has Done For Me and What It Means To Me

By Sam Masterman, Age 9

I would say martial arts means many things to me. It is very important in my life. I am learning many new things, not about fighting and anger, but about peace and happiness. Martial arts isn’t just a sport, but a way of life, one that I believe will take me far.

Don’t misunderstand me, I do learn kicks and punches, hold-downs and throws and on Leadership we also learn weapons; but it has also taught me physical and mental fitness, discipline, focus, perseverance, respect, honour, nobility and kindness.

At first, I was nervous, but now I love training. It is one of my most favourite things to do. The biggest thing about martial arts is that it’s fun; and if you have a great teacher like I do, then you’ll enjoy it too.

How Martial Arts Has Influenced My Life

By Lauren Deabill

I have been studying martial arts for just over a year now. I am 10 years old. I really like going to class as often as I can, which is about three to four times a week. I am in the Leadership Club, which means that I am committed to working toward my 1st-Degree Black Belt.

Martial arts is a great influence in my life. It gives me courage, self-esteem and other very important life skills. Every time I test for a new belt, it reminds me that I can keep learning new kicks, blocks, patterns and other skills like confidence, respect  and courtesy for others. Martial arts is a great life-long experience that we all can do to help us grow and to learn more about ourselves.

I really enjoy Tae Kwon do because I have learnt how to defend myself. I put a lot of effort into my training and this keeps me fit. I have also made lots of new friends. I would recommend Tae Kwon Do to all my school friends.

I am also competing in my first sparring competition on the 4th of August and really looking forward to the challenge.
